It’s the simple things in life that bring comfort, a sense of joy and well-being. Behold, the old-fashioned hot water bottle. Cuddling up with a “hottie” is like sipping a big mug of hot cocoa, snuggling by a toasty fire, or eating a bowl of Bubbie’s matzah ball soup. It means someone is taking good care of you—even if that person is you.
Economical and eco-friendly, the hot water bottle will keep warm all night making it easier to turn down the thermostat before going to bed, saving both gas and money. I like to place my hottie in between the sheets down by my toes. In the morning, the water can be used to hydrate plants or stored in a container to reheat later that evening.
Hotties are also great for anxiety, stomach aches, menstrual pain and sore muscles. I keep a special one tucked in my doula bag to soothe laboring mamas.
My go-to hotties are made by German manufacturer Fashy. Some other hot water bottles are made of rubber but these are made from an odorless, recyclable, and non-toxic thermoplastic material which retains heat longer. They are available in assorted shapes and sizes for kids and adults alike and can be purchased on Amazon.
Once you have your hottie, it’s fun to dress it up in a “cozy.” There are adorable patterns for those who knit or a wide selection is readily available for purchase on Etsy. I bought mine (pictured above) from Ox’s Cross using vintage and upcycled fabrics.
Hotties make wonderful gifts—treat yourself or a loved one to a special hottie and cozy this holiday season!
